Grave liners and Burial Vaults
Grave liner vs Vault:
Grave liners and vaults both play an important role in keeping the ground of the cemetery level. Over time a casket will deteriorate under the pressure of the overlying earth and machinery used to dig surrounding graves. Over time this causes the surface of a grave to sink.
Grave liners and vaults both provide a substantial structure to prevent this from occurring. Though not typically required by law, most cemeteries require the use of a burial vault or grave liner.
A vault surrounds the casket on all sides with the top sealing to the base.
A grave liner may or may not have a bottom depending on how it is constructed. The top simply sits on the base without sealing.
